A simple explanation of how the lookup tools work and what to check before buying.
Overview
MyLightbulbs can suggest likely bulb details using three main sources:
- A photo of the bulb or fitting
- Text printed on the bulb or packaging
- Model or barcode lookups through product databases such as EPREL
Photo-based identification
When you upload a clear image, MyLightbulbs tries to identify visible characteristics such as:
- The bulb base or cap type
- The bulb shape
- The likely technology, such as LED or halogen
- Any visible printed markings such as wattage or colour temperature
Results are strongest when the photo is well lit and clearly shows the fitting or markings.
Text-based identification
If you type in wording found on the bulb or box, MyLightbulbs looks for common patterns such as:
- Base types like GU10, E14, E27 or B22
- Wattage such as 4.6W or 8.5W
- Lumens, for example 470 lm
- Colour temperature references such as 2700K or warm white
- Dimmable or non-dimmable wording
EPREL and product lookup
Where model identifiers or barcodes are available, MyLightbulbs can use product data lookups to find a likely official product match and extract details such as:
- Base type
- Technology
- Wattage
- Lumens
- Colour temperature
- Dimmable status
How matching works
Once likely bulb details are identified, MyLightbulbs compares them against known products. The bulb fitting or base type is treated as the most important factor, while other details such as brightness, shape, technology and colour temperature help rank the best matches.
This means some products may still be shown even if they are not a perfect match, as long as they are likely to fit.
Important limitations
- Identification is a helpful guide, not a guarantee
- Photos may be unclear or incomplete
- Bulb markings can be partially missing or hard to read
- Retail product data can be incomplete or inconsistent
- You should always check product suitability before purchase or installation
Best results
To improve accuracy, try to:
- Photograph the bulb close up in good light
- Include the cap or fitting in the image
- Enter any visible product codes or markings
- Use the fixture context, such as spotlight, ceiling light or bedside lamp
Final check before buying
Before ordering, it is always sensible to confirm the fitting, size and intended use of the bulb, especially for specialist fixtures, dimmable circuits and enclosed fittings.
